Waiting Until November for Cyber Essentials Plus Is a Risk to Your Q4...

Every fourth quarter, a familiar pattern plays out across professional networks. Firms operating under major wealth management, legal, and financial services umbrellas discover, often later than they should, that their Cyber Essentials Plus certification is expiring right when it matters most. St James's Place made the certification mandatory for its 2,800-plus partner practices in May 2024, and it wasn't the first major network to do it, nor will it be the last. When one of the UK's biggest wealth management networks moves, others tend to follow.

That creates a spike that catches a lot of firms off guard. Annual renewal cycles, partner onboarding deadlines and year-end procurement all land in the same few months, and the result is a real bottleneck. St James's Place itself pushed over 1,600 businesses through accreditation in just six months once its rollout began. Multiply that pattern across every network doing something similar, and it's easy to see why auditors get booked solid between November and February, right when your firm needs one the most.

The True Timeline for Cyber Essentials Plus

There's a persistent myth that Cyber Essentials Plus is something you can knock out over a weekend. It isn't. The real timeline for a medium to large firm usually runs six to twelve weeks from start to finish, before you've even factored in queueing for an assessor during peak season.

The process has real teeth to it. You need a passing Cyber Essentials Basic certificate dated within three months before you can apply for Plus, and once you've passed Basic, the clock starts running; most schemes give you 90 days to reach Plus before you have to begin again.

An assessor then runs authenticated vulnerability scans against a sample of your devices, tests your email filtering, reviews your mobile device policies, and checks that patches for anything high or critical have gone out within 14 days of release. The latest version of the standard, effective from April 2026, also made multi-factor authentication mandatory across every cloud service and admin account. Getting through all of that properly takes real time, whatever the marketing on some assessors' websites might suggest.

The Commercial Risk

This is really a revenue conversation dressed up as an IT one. Firms that can't demonstrate their digital fitness before the Q4 procurement cycles close tend to find themselves quietly dropped from consideration before anyone's had the chance to discuss pricing.

For firms operating inside networks like St James's Place, certification sits alongside the relationship itself, not next to it. For firms bidding into legal or financial services supply chains more broadly, a lapsed or incomplete certificate can rule you out of a tender before your proposal's even been opened. Leaving it until the pressure's on means competing for a shrinking pool of assessor slots against everyone else who left it just as late, which rarely ends well for whoever's at the back of the queue.

The Fleko Approach

The firms that never feel this pressure tend to be the ones who haven't let their compliance baseline slip in the first place, rather than the ones who move fastest once November arrives. That's the shift we try to help clients make, away from a once-a-year scramble and toward something closer to continuous oversight, so certification stays current instead of becoming something to chase every autumn.

In practice, that means patching, access control and configuration reviews happen steadily throughout the year instead of being crammed into a pre-audit sprint. MFA enforcement and device hygiene become part of how the business runs day to day, rather than a checklist assembled the week before an assessor turns up. So when the November rush hits, and everyone else is fighting over the last available slots, yours has usually been sitting there quietly valid for months.

If your Cyber Essentials Plus renewal is anywhere near the horizon, the conversation is worth having now rather than in November. Get in touch with the Fleko team, and we'll make sure compliance never becomes something that costs you revenue.
